We take great pride in introducing you to the UR-110 'BAKELITE' Unique Piece. The auction taking place on October 15th at 10 am Geneva time on the certified URWERK Pre-Owned website will be open to bids for 48 hours.
What is Bakelite?
Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, better known as Bakelite, is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. The Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland developed it in Yonkers, New York, in 1907.
Its properties made it suited for a wide variety of purposes. For example, it's resistant to heat. It does not conduct electricity, so it is an excellent insulator—which made it particularly useful in the automotive and electrical industries emerging in the early 1900s.

The UR-110
First launched in 2011, the UR-110 was an evolution in design for URWERK, named the Torpedo. It has a satellite-based movement that took the entire team almost two years to develop—consisting of a central carousel providing the mechanism with stability and equilibrium; planetary gearing assuring the parallel rotation of the three-hour satellites and the orbit around the dial. The three counter-rotating hour modules - each comprising an hour satellite, minute hand, and counterbalance - are mounted on a planetary gear. These three modules are in constant counter-rotation to counteract the direction of rotation of the central carousel.
Winner of the 2011 Grand Prix d'Horologerie Design prize, the UR-110 sure turned heads with its asymmetrical case and the three arrow-shaped "torpedoes" flying in formation to indicate the time the UR-110 came with serious attitude. A silent ballet of time from the satellites as they point out the time along a 60-minute track. An "Oil Change" indicator alerts the user when it is time for a service; also equipped with a "Day/Night" indicator to keep track of changing time zones, all visible through the wide panoramic sapphire crystal aperture.
Turn the UR-110 over to see the twin turbines on the back through two portholes, these turbines minimize wear in the automatic winding system.
The UR-110 graced the front covers of multiple major watchmaking magazines and more recently faced evil on the wrist of Marvel Studios Iron Man, the most badass Superhero of them all! Now it is time for its final mission.

Creators Thoughts:
Felix Baumgartner - "Bakelite was one of the first high-tech materials ever developed. Its properties were and remain multiple and revolutionary. Insulating and heat-resistant, it was present in all everyday objects at the time, from eyeglass frames to radios."
Martin Frei - "The UR-110 was a logical evolution of our creations. We imagined time as a 'silent journey' where the hour satellites make a full rotation of the dial. But it is a velvet revolution; between rotation and counter rotations, the effect is subtle and fluid. Things are happening on the dial that is not obvious at first glance. Everything looks normal; however, in fact, they are everything but."
The UR-110' BAKELITE is one-of-a-kind; this is one of your chances to own an exceptional piece of URWERK history! From all the URWERK team, good luck and happy bidding!
